TIL that gzip's header has a 32-bit size limitation, leading to incorrect reporting of compression ratio/uncompressed size for files > 4Gb. The recommended workaround is (ridiculously) to just use "zcat file.gz | wc -c". Given the header format has an arbitrary size "extra fields" section, this seems pretty egregious.
